Hi! Here’s my latest fine dining in Seoul find.
I recently had the chance
to visit Gwanghwamun’s
Pavlo Grill & Bar!
I’d spotted it on Catchtable,
the restaurant reservation app, quite a few times,
so the name was already familiar.
The reviews were encouraging,
and people seemed genuinely impressed by the food,
so I went in with fairly high hopes.
Among the fine-dining restaurants in Jongno,
it’s particularly known for its steaks
and grilled dishes, which had me curious.
It also seemed to be a popular choice
for date nights in Gwanghwamun,
but this time I went with a friend
for a late dinner.
After wondering about it for so long,
I was excited before we even arrived.

An Elegant 15th-Floor Entrance and an Open Kitchen
Head up to the KT Gwanghwamun Building’s 15th floor,
and you’ll first come to
The Plaza Dining.
Pavlo Grill & Bar
is located within this dining space.
Even from outside,
it had the polished feel
of an upscale restaurant.
The open kitchen, visible before you enter,
especially caught my eye.
You can see the meat-aging cabinet
as well as the wine storage area
from there.
Having those elements on display
made me even more curious
about what would arrive at the table.
Before we’d even stepped inside,
it already had that refined feel
I’d hoped for from a Jongno fine-dining restaurant,
and my expectations kept climbing.

Inside: Gyeongbokgung Palace Views and Gwanghwamun at Night
Once we stepped inside,
the atmosphere I’d noticed at the entrance
carried right through.
The room felt spacious and comfortable,
with an elegant finish
that reminded me
of hotel dining.
Throughout our meal,
the setting made it easy
to settle in and relax.
My personal favorite feature,
though,
was the nighttime view through the windows!
Gyeongbokgung Palace and central Gwanghwamun
spread out below us,
and the view was beautiful.
The polished interior
paired with the city lights
made dinner feel that much more special.
If you’re looking for a Gwanghwamun date-night restaurant,
that view alone
is a real draw.

The AFTER 8 Dinner Course: What’s Included and What It Costs
For dinner, we ordered
Pavlo’s AFTER 8 course.
It’s a new offering
from The Plaza Dining:
a course menu for the second dinner seating,
which begins
at 8 p.m.
The price was $119 for two,
or about $60 per person.
For a late-evening meal
with a premium set menu,
that seemed pretty reasonable to me.
The course moves from an appetizer
to shrimp and pasta,
then finishes with a grilled main.
There are choices for some courses,
so you can tailor the meal to your taste.
We chose the Brussels sprouts,
garlic butter pasta,
and tenderloin steak.
For dessert, we also ordered
the Pavlo chocolate cake separately.
During our visit, there was also
a whisky promotion
featuring Hibiki.
The selection included cocktails
and highballs made with Hibiki,
the Japanese whisky.
The advertised promotion
ran through November 30.
The drinks menu had plenty of variety,
making this a tempting spot
for a drink
alongside a late dinner.
If you’re exploring fine dining in Seoul
and want good drinks with your meal,
this is an option worth considering.

Starting Light with Brioche and Butter
Once we’d ordered the course,
the first thing to arrive
was the bread.
That evening,
it was brioche served with butter.
It was a nice, light way to start
before the plated courses arrived.
We nibbled on the brioche
while waiting
for the next dish.
It didn’t feel like the kind of bread course
that fills you up too early,
which I appreciated.

Crispy Brussels Sprouts with Deeply Roasted Flavor
While we were enjoying the bread,
our first appetizer arrived:
the Brussels sprouts.
As the name suggests,
this dish puts Brussels sprouts front and center.
The base of the plate
was a layer of celeriac purée,
with the sprouts
arranged on top.
They were roasted until
they were almost fried-crisp,
giving them a lovely crunch.
The roasted aroma
was especially pronounced.
The smooth celeriac purée
and crisp Brussels sprouts
worked beautifully together.
For a vegetable dish,
it had a surprising depth of roasted flavor,
and I enjoyed it more than I’d expected.
It was a quietly impressive
start to the meal.

Grilled Tiger Shrimp with Rich Bisque Sauce
Next up
was the grilled tiger shrimp.
The large shrimp
came split in half,
making it easy to eat.
It was also topped
with a generous amount of sauce.
Tiger shrimp already has
a robust flavor of its own,
and the bisque sauce
added another layer of savory depth.
Rather than hiding
the shrimp’s flavor,
the sauce seemed to intensify it.
I love that kind of rich,
concentrated seafood flavor,
so this course really worked for me.
When I heard the next pasta dish
would also use the bisque sauce,
I was even more excited.

Garlic Butter Pasta with a Rich, Clinging Sauce
Then came the dish I’d been looking forward to:
the garlic butter pasta.
We were told it’s made
with the same bisque sauce used for the tiger shrimp,
along with butter.
As soon as it arrived,
that warm, buttery aroma
made a great first impression.
The sauce wasn’t thin or runny;
it was thick and rich,
coating the pasta beautifully.
I’ve always preferred pasta
with a substantial, clinging sauce,
so this was right up my alley.
The bisque brought
a deep, concentrated flavor,
balanced by the richness of the butter.
The combination really worked.
I also liked how its flavors
followed naturally
from the shrimp course.
For me, this was
one of the meal’s most memorable dishes.

Tenderloin Steak with an Impressively Even Cook
At last,
the main course arrived: tenderloin steak.
I’d ordered it medium-rare,
and
as soon as it hit the table,
I was impressed by
how evenly it had been cooked.
The outside had the kind of crisp sear
you get from intense heat,
while the center
was still rosy.
Cutting into it revealed
a beautifully even cook throughout.
The beef seemed well aged,
with none of that tough chewiness;
it was wonderfully tender.
Each bite also brought out
the beef’s own rich flavor.
Alongside the steak
came a tomato-based sauce,
mashed potatoes,
and creamed spinach.
With the sides,
it made a nicely rounded plate.
My one reservation
was the tomato-based sauce,
which didn’t quite work for me.
Perhaps the beef was simply so good
that the tomato sauce
felt like a less-than-ideal match.
I found myself wanting
to focus on the meat
and appreciate its flavor on its own.
Still, the tenderloin’s
precise cooking and tender texture
left me very happy.
If you’re seeking fine dining in Seoul
with steak as the main attraction,
this part of the meal
could be a real highlight.

Pavlo Chocolate Cake Made the Birthday Dinner Special
With the set menu finished,
it was time for
the dessert we’d ordered separately.
Our choice
was the Pavlo chocolate cake.
It also happened to be
my friend’s birthday,
so I’d requested a personalized message in advance.
They added the lettering
to the cake,
making the occasion feel even more special.
That thoughtful option makes it
a lovely finish to a birthday or anniversary meal,
or even
a Gwanghwamun date night.
When we first ordered it,
I did wonder whether the chocolate cake
was a little expensive.
Once I tasted it, though,
I changed my mind.
The chocolate flavor
was incredibly intense,
with the kind of richness
you expect from a really good chocolate cake.
It was also larger than I’d expected,
with a generous amount
for two people to share.
Taking the flavor and portion size together,
the price that had initially seemed high
started to make more sense.
If you love deeply chocolatey desserts,
this is one
worth trying.
Personally,
I really enjoyed the chocolate cake,
and if you’re debating dessert,
I’d recommend it.
So the two of us
made the most of the evening,
from our late dinner course
right through to the birthday dessert.
I’d been curious about this place for a while
and arrived with high expectations,
but it turned out even better than I’d hoped.
The elegant interior
and Gwanghwamun’s nighttime views
made the whole meal feel special.
More importantly, the food
was consistently good,
and the tenderloin steak in particular
exceeded my expectations.
There were a couple of things
that didn’t quite land for me,
but the overall course progression
and dining experience were genuinely enjoyable.
I also loved being able
to linger over a late dinner
in such an atmospheric setting,
without feeling rushed.
It struck me as a good choice
for a special occasion,
and it was a lovely way
to wrap up my friend’s birthday celebration.
Who I’d Recommend It For
Anyone looking for a special meal in an elegant setting.
Couples planning a date night or anniversary dinner.
Steak lovers and fans of grilled dishes.
Anyone who wants to slow down over good food.
Diners ready for a change from their usual restaurant routine.
That’s my honest review—not a “paid for it myself” visit,
but my own take all the same.
